OK, I got it working. I took the tip of removing the files under
~/.mythtv/themes and themecache. I also removed all of the themes under
/usr/share/mythtv/themes (after doing a sudo apt-get remove
mythtv-themes). I then exited the front end, restarted, went to the
Theme Chooser, hit M, chose "Show Downloadable Themes", picked the one I
wanted, hit M, hit "Select Theme", then restarted the front end. The
chosen theme now shows up.
It wasn't a big deal, but it seemed simple and wasn't working, so it was
a bit frustrating. But everyone's tips paid off. I thank you all very
much!
