After VDPAU, Mythfrontend on OS X will disappoint you. There is no
MythTV-accessible driver equivalent to VDPAU, so no
hardware-accelerated playback.[1] VDPAU's Advanced 2X and Temporal 2X
deinterlacers are better than Yadif 2X, anyway. If your Mac is
VDPAU-capable, install Linux on it for Mythfrontend instead.

[1] 0.24 added support for VDA hardware-assisted H.264 decoding, but
even if you can get it to work it's not the same thing as VDPAU's
hardware-accelerated decoding/rendering/deinterlacing for both MPEG-2
and H.264.
