Again, its a win for the network because now you are watching longer
than you would, and actually more intently than you would because of the
live event.  You were prepared to watch 1 hr, but now you are watching
1.5 hours, and most likely with much more commercials.  You have made
them more money (not at the moment, but in the end when it inflates its
viewing numbers upon next time ads are sold).

The network doesn't care what it airs.  It only cares about the number
of viewers, amount/price of ads, and cost of shows.  It is a business
and it is treated as such.  That is why there is so much reality tv - it
costs much less.  Even if the numbers go down due to that, if it is more
profitable, then that is where the network will go.  That is why when
they get a good game show to air during primetime, they do... it costs
EVEN LESS than a reality show.  Minute to Win It?  A bar game show on
primetime?  This costs even less than Wipeout...

So, sports brings in money, everything gets trumped.  Makes sense
(though I hate watching sports, so I am fine if they disappear to cable
forever).
