This thread has made interesting reading; I too am in the UK and the
above mentioned Snooker event had already come to my mind. In 1985
there are only 4 choices of channels; Lord knows what programmes were
lost by the over-run. I was one of the 18.5 million viewers.

Snooker is still the primary culprit for UK over-runs, I think. I have
lost late night Saturday programmes within the past couple of years on
account of this. Wimbledon too, sometimes, and live music,
occasionally.
