It requires an X11 GUI. Since the X11 GUI has a clean separation between
the X11 client application and the X11 display server, the MythTV
backend machine need only have the libraries to support the MythTV setup
X11 client application. The X11 display server runs on the machine
accessing the MythTV backend manchine over SSH. Therefore, there is not
need for runlevel 5 on the MythTV backend machine as it causes the X11
display server to run which is not needed.

I always run at runlevel 3 on my backend. Since I always run the X11
display server on another machine over SSH, I have no need to ever run
it on my backend. In fact, the X11 display server is not even installed
on my backend, so I cannot run at runlevel 5.
