As with much else, it depends.  Some providers (Time Warner
is a poster child) make almost all content other than locals
as copy protected, so the SiliconDust products are not
useful for those providers.  And even when the providers are
much more liberal regarding content protection, channels
such as Showtime/HBO are usually protected, which
requires something (like) a HD-PVR to record them.

Back the the HD-PVR.  Are you attempting to use the
IR port in the HD-PVR, either directly, or indirectly
because you are loading the ir-kbd-i2c module
for another IR device?  Others have recently posted
that they get hangs in those cases:

and that you should remove/blacklist the module and/or
recompile your modules.
