"Z" is a usual way to represent that the time is in UTC (or "Z"ulu time,
from the nautical time zone reference, used since the early 1950's).
If you are going to write your own perl programs, I strongly suggest
using one of the CPAN data/time modules to parse time, since
there are many possible representations, and I doubt you want to
duplicate all that work.
