This is a risk analysis/acceptance issue. Risk is the
product of the impact and the likelyhood. It is likely
that a disk will fail. The impact, to me, personally of
losing the content is low (it is only TV!), for others it
may be moderate or even high. One can apply
mitigations (such as off-site backups, or RAID5/6)
to address the residual risk to levels that you are
willing to accept (note that even with RAID6, and/or
offsite backup "stuff happens", and the risk may
never be zero, just low enough you are willing to
accept). Note that my risk acceptance may be
different to yours, and one should never presume
to know someone else's level of acceptance.
