Thanks for the suggestions everybody. Here's an update of where I've
got to with this.

I decided to give Air Video a try as I'd heard of it before and it
gets very good feedback in iPhone-land. There is a version for Linux
but it's in alpha (the main versions are for Mac or Windows).

I got Air Video up and running and it's transcoding and streaming to
an Android app called Mirage on my Galaxy S II. So far, so good, but
there are some gotchas:

- The Mirage app doesn't yet support skip forward/backward so if the
1st 10 minutes of your recording are the end of the previous program
you just have to watch through that. The developer says that skip
functionality will be added in future.

- I can only get Air Video to present the plain .mpg files to the
Mirage app so I can see a whole load of file names of recordings, but
the default file names in MythTV aren't very meaningful. So I tried to
get Air Video to present friendlier symlink files that I created with
mythlink.pl, but it doesn't seem to work. I know there are limitations
with samba and symlinks so I mounted the MythTV files over sshfs but
that doesn't work either. Next step may be to try it over NFS.

- Getting Air Video up and running isn't trivial. For a start it uses
a customised version of ffmpeg which you have to download and compile
yourself. So if you're a strictly RPM kinda guy that's a bit of a
pain. It also uses mp4creator for something (not sure what yet) which
died years ago and getting a version of that installed is extremely
difficult - luckily it seems to run without it but I'd like to get
that installed for completeness.

Regards,
Phill
