I suspect it's your default sound card in Ubuntu is set to another sound 
device (i.e. onboard sound).  I had to a an .asoundrc to my home folder with 
one line in it....

pcm.!default "hdmi:0,3"

where hdmi:0,3 the hdmi card 0 device 3.  In your case it will likely be 
hdmi:0,9 (the car may not be 0, confirm with aplay -l).
