We've discussed this in the past, although things may have changed since then. 
Detection of commercials (adverts) tends to vary by channel. What may work 100% 
on ITV1, for example, may not work so well on Channel 4 or 5 (and vice versa).

I remember someone proposed building a list of 'things that worked' by channel 
and using that as input to the commercial detection system. I don't know if that 
ever got anywhere.

As most advert breaks are 4 minutes it is relatively easy to skip them with the 
remote, so personally I don't bother with running any detection code on my 
recordings.
