mythtv-backend is being run as 'root'. When I ran it as a service (under
'mythtv' as the user) it worked fine.

Why would you run mythbackend as root under ubuntu? The packages are setup
to run it as user mythtv. By doing it some other way you are inviting
trouble (and seemingly getting it!)
