You did not say what your Nvidia card is.  I have had problems like
this twice in the last couple of years where the new Nvidia drivers
did not work with my GT220 card (Asus Bravo 220 silent).  Eventually,
a newer version has fixed the problem, but not usually for several
versions.  You should probably report the problem to Nvidia.  They
seem to not be testing new drivers properly with the older cards.

I think there were some recent changes in X also, but if changing back
to the old driver has fixed things, X is probably not where the
problem is.
