Odd.  Never seen anything like this myself.

What do the mythfrontend logs say?  What was it doing when it failed.
You might need to turn on verbose logging.

Try running the frontend with the --reset switch?  Might be a
configuration issue?

Perhaps a dependency, or flaky video drivers?
