I started running up the frontend on the main server box where the backend
runs and I can't duplicate the problem - it seems to be specific to a
remote frontend.

Once upon a time I used to have no problems running the frontend under gdb
on my remote box by just patching the .xinitrc file to start it
appropriately but it doesn't work any more (it is probably 4 years since I
last did it and many many things have changed in the meantime)

So I have tried attaching gdb to the running task but rather than segfault
I just get a blank screen and a hangup.

I've attached the gdb backtrace - if its useful I'll open a ticket
otherwise someone else will have to reproduce it.
