A network tuner is nothing more than a network-connected computer and a 
tuner.  Sure, the HDHR has this all "in the box", but there's no reason 
that has to be the case.  You could make your own with vtuner or (the 
heavyweight solution) by setting up a remote backend.

Which is cheaper, though, can only be determined by pricing out the 
various options at any given time (and, ideally, including power 
usage/efficiency in the determination).  As far as easier goes, though, 
I think if we on this list wanted easier, we wouldn't be running MythTV 
(with all the limitations imposed on us by service providers) and would 
just be using a cable- or satellite-company-provided DVR.  ;)
