For VDA: you need 10.6.3 minimum and a mac with NVIDIA GeForce 9400M,
GeForce 320M, GeForce GT 330M, ATI HD Radeon GFX, Intel HD Graphics

that's per Apple's doc

To check if VDA is in use, during playback, press Menu -> Playback ->
Playback data ;  Codec/Dec will show H.264 vda
