Thanks for your pateince, Mike - the problem was a lack of write
permissions on /var/spool/mythtv (for recordings) on the slave backend.
I guess it should not make the frontend segfault. It is easily
reproducable if anyone wants to pursue it, I'm happy that my slave
backend is now finally working.
