Interesting observation! A bad X resolution seems like a reasonable
explanation for these problems. For it to be switching resolutions,
you must have the Appearance > Video Mode Settings > "Separate video
modes for GUI and and TV playback" setting enabled. That setting was
disabled on my working system, so as a test I enabled it and played a
recording. I got working video, no black screen. I also checked the
settings table in the database for my old non-working hostname, and it
was disabled on that one, too. So this setting doesn't appear to be
the source of the problem in my case. It does sound like our symptoms
are slightly different, however. I'm interpreting your description to
mean that you get the black screen in some cases but not others. I
always got the black screen without fail.
