I don't know if it's related, but I remember, that I had a similar 
problem after an upgrade to a newer Nvidia driver.

The proportions of the desktop were distorted. To solve it, I had to ad 
the following at the end of the 'Monitor' section of my 
'/etc/X11/xorg.conf':

Option		"DPI" "100 x 100"
