No, you are not listening (reading).  The Ceton device can provide the stream
to the recorder if your cable box can display it.  The stream may be DRM
encumbered, so your recording/playback system may not be able to deal with
it.

I suppose if you were to be pedantic, the Ceton rep was lying since their
device is a tuner, and does not record anything.

You can use any Windows Media Center Extender (just happens to be that xboxs
are most common).  You can use other software to record too, subject to the
DRM in the program from the cable company.

FWIW, I was able to record HBO for several years with my Ceton card and MythTV.
Then HBO started cracking down on cable companies to enforce the DRM setting
they wanted.  Now I can't.  I can still use the card and Windows Media Center 
to record HBO.  It is NOT the card that is the issue.
