Unfortunately, the cable companies are betting on that -- no need to
organize and train to resolve "outlier" issues like this; worst case people
just give up and pay for their own DVR solution, more $$.

Hopefully they realize there are a *lot* of people like me, who went the
other way -- when they started the digital transition, with uncertainty
about whether and when QAM would work, moving channels around, no clear
cablecard solution (at the time), etc, we put an antenna in the attic and
dropped cable altogether.  Perfect HD reception for our local channels, and
the non-network programs we want to see are mostly available either for
free online (HGTV et al), or via iTunes or similar, costing far less than
our yearly cable bill anyway.  Not true for everyone, for sure.

If at some point the cable companies standardize this all better and make
it easily accessible, we might go back, but until then...
