Aha - indeed (temporarily) fixed by stopping mythbackend and running
mythbackend --enable-dblog --daemon
from the command line.

Now I need to decide whether I use the mythweb logs enough to justify running --enable-dblog.... Probably not, since I've only just noticed this, and I upgraded to .27 on Tuesday. I'll update the mythlogserver wiki tomorrow - it's 4.45 am here and about time I went to bed!

BTW the 0.27 upgrade was painless - I'll add my name to the list of happy upgraders.
