Not sure how to use a DVD player could ever be sanctioned here.

If you want to play any DVD, you have to make sure you use a DVD drive
that let you access the content.
Either use a drive that let you access the encrypted content (e.g.
avoid LG-Philipps, Panasonic/Matshita drive). Those drives prevent you
physically from accessing the data if the zone set on the drive do not
match the zone set on the DVD.
With Toshiba, Pioneer drives, they do not have such restrictions and
will work just fine one myth provided libdvdcss is installed

For all other drives, use a RPC1 firmware (http://www.rpc1.org/)

Those restrictions are the same as with any other players: VLC or
mplayer. Those will not fare better than mythtv
