FYI jya, I'm in Melbourne and use the xbmc mythtv pvr addon on a pi and have no problems with playback of any HD or SD recordings. I'm pretty sure all the SD broadcasts use mp2 audio but have never really taken much notice.
Actually I have found the pi to play back everything I have tried using recent builds of xbmc (raspbmc), including 30GB bluray rips over smb.
The general advice with the pi seems to be that if you experience instability/performance issues that others don't, you may need to use a better power supply.
Hopefully you'll have time/motivation to revisit the frontend on the pi once these patches are in.
