Raymond was right..
The geometry override would only have helped if you had (previously)
preset the mythtv gui to 3000x2000 or similar..
You could use "--geometry 600x300" to be able to navigate the menus but
it could still be very difficult (& unusable for anything else..).

Something else is video mode switching..
Do you have some clever desktop/window manager/effects running?

Check/post the /var/log/Xorg.0.log file after starting & stopping the
FE..

Could try setting "painter" to auto or openGL.
