    Source and target frame size and bitrate don't even scratch the 
surface here. There are TONS of h264 options. Some of them are quite
computationally intensive while providing little value in terms of 
quality or reduced file size.

    Handbrake could easily be doing something very boneheaded. 

    There's an "advanced configuration" page in Handbreke you want to
be looking at. The named preset you're using might also give some clues
as to what going on. The preset you're jusing could be overkill.

    Although it sounds like that roku conversion script mentioned by the
other guy could be the way to go.

    I spent a lot of time myself in the beginning getting my own h264 options
"just so" in terms of balancing quality versus CPU time. That Roku conversion
script seems to be something similar but just tailored to the Roku.
