The 1212 supports recording the analog output of a set top box.  This
is the only method that allows recording high definition copy
controlled content.  The 1212 also produces MPEG-4 recordings,
compared with MPEG-2 on Comcast cable, resulting in a smaller file on
disk for the same quality recording.

Getting closed captioning to work on an HDPVR is a bit tricky, though.
 You'll need an additional standard definition analog recorder for
that, such as a PVR 150.

Only the 1212 (box with straight sides) has drivers for Linux.  The
HDPVR-2 series (with pinched sides) is incompatible.

Kidding aside, it's not really that hard to get the basics working.
Continual tweaking for advanced features can take up arbitrary amounts
of time.
