And, FWIW, rebooting has another huge benefit. If you try to clean
things up manually, you take full responsibility for ensuring things are
shut down, fully reset, and restarted in the proper order, with proper
timing, etc. If, however, you just reboot, you allow your
(already-proven-to-work) system start/stop scripts to take
responsibility for putting things back in a working condition. The only
thing you'll lose in a reboot is some amount of time on your uptime
command output--but if that's really a problem for anyone, I can send a
patch for uptime that will give any value they want. ;)
