Those are actually handy in more cases than they cause problems.  X11 by
itself can't traverse NAT for example.  So if you are on a WiFi
somewhere you can't cause a remote client to connect to your X server
direct but if you connected to it via SSH (like you really should be
doing in he hostile net of today anyway) it will transparently make
everything work, allowing you to run apps on the remote host and have
them display locally.

But when you are on the same network segment with the app server it is
often a real benefit to dispense with the overhead of SSH and open up a
straight pipe to your X11 server.  But wandering back to topic,
mythtv-setup is pretty much indistinguishable however it runs, on a
locally connected display, X11 forwarded over SSH or a direct X11
network connection.  It works, so I guess, by longstanding Linux
tradition, it must be replaced.  :)
