So the profile that I select in that list is the one that it will run with ?

How do I know how many CPUs to select ?

Exactly which logs should I be watching ?

By howto, do you mean the wiki entry or is there another document I am
supposed to be looking at.

Is it necessary to install vdpau-video-freeworld ?

Would anyone care to share their xorg.conf file ?

My current symptoms are that the front end can't keep up even with a
simple avi file, ie the video runs way too slow. Mythfrontend hangs
when I try to leave the video player.

This machine has 2GB of RAM, installed into one of the two sockets.

Any ideas ?

Note, I probably didn't have to compile in VDPAU support but only found
VDPAU was missing on my Ubuntu system when I tried to compile and found
it wasn't pulling it in... and the system was missing VDPAU libraries...
as a result video playback was awful until VDPAU was enabled and the system stopped using the main CPU.

"Include libvdpau1-dev is installed (otherwise no VDPAU compilation
possible). This wasn’t included in my default installation." (Default: Ubuntu 10.10)

I've also got some imperical notes on VDPAU profiles (Slim, Normal
etc). I ended up editing the pre-configured profiles you've found and
watching playback. For my HW I could only really get Temporal 1X to
work, with an ION 1, and I suspect with the more recent ION 2 chipset
you'd have better HD performance.

My post also has some logs which other mythtv-ers were able to browse and critique possible issues with my setup. If you can collect them I suspect you'll narrow down your problems quickly as the logs are very verbose.

Hope this helps, I know its not exactly a plug-and-play experience.
