Hi;
<br>
<br>
OK, good news. I've duplicated your problem with the
<br>
same error messages and no response after sudo start
<br>
mysql.
<br>
<br>
Go to /etc/apparmor.d and look at the file:
<br>
<br>
usr.sbin.mysqld
<br>
<br>
I suspect you'll see lines like:
<br>
<br>
/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.pid w,
<br>
/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock w,
<br>
<br>
On my 11.10 system, they look like:
<br>
<br>
/{,var/}run/mysqld/mysqld.pid w,
<br>
/{,var/}run/mysqld/mysqld.sock w,
<br>
<br>
Because now /run exists along with /var/run.
<br>
<br>
You may also see the same file name with .dpkg
<br>
at the end of it (or something like it.)
<br>
<br>
I'm/guessing/ that when you upgraded, you were
<br>
asked if you wanted to install the new file and
<br>
you answered no.

It works!!
<br>
<br>
Bill, you are a genius! Thank you so much. It was clearly only a
tiny problem, but you managed to find the needle in the haystack!
<br>
<br>
You will be correct in how the problem was caused as well. I will
have clicked to keep the old file as I have other problems in the
past with newer files replacing my previous settings. I'm not sure
what the recommended plan would be there (other than /don't
upgrade/ ), but here are my lessons learned:
<br>
<br>
1) Only upgrade on LTS releases (and some would argue to not even
do that)
<br>
<br>
2) When there are differences between old and new config files
during an upgrade, *cut and paste the diff information* for use if
there's a problem at the end!!!
<br>
<br>
Thanks again Bill, and that comes from all of the family too.
<br>
<br>
Now I need to track back what I did along the way. I think the
only thing that needs 'undoing' is one of the files or folders
that I granted universal access to. I'll find that and get it
patched back up as it should be.
<br>
<br>
Thanks to everyone else who helped too. It was a tricky one to
find.
<br>
<br>
Best wishes

It was set to 'o+w' during the process of getting this thing
sorted, but I want everything back as it should be now.<br>
