You'll be pleased to know that MythTV has built-in support for almost all remote controls. If you are using MythTV in 2020 or later, you may want to upgrade to an all-in-one USB device such as the MX3 Air Mouse Remote or similar. Many remotes listed here may be obsolete.

In the beginning, you had to go infrared and use LIRC (Linux Infra-red Remote Control). If you wanted to avoid LIRC completely but still use a remote, you could use a USB or PS/2 IR Wireless Keyboard and capture the keyboard commands via a programmable or learning remote. Later it was possible to use the built in kernel support without the use of LIRC. Some say that navigating MythTV is more responsive (faster) through IR keyboard commands than LIRC. But in modern times, a USB HID can avoid all this and get the keys directly to Linux over 2.4GHz radio.

Please look at the list of articles here for more detail on individual remotes
