What Is Bit-Perfect Playback?
Bit perfect playback refers to the ability of the soundcard to pass an untouched digital stream through its S/PDIF port to the connected DAC. Signals such as PCM, AC3, DTS, etc, require bit-perfect for proper playback.
Bit-Perfect is also required for proper playback of CD's using an external DAC.

Does My Chipset Have Bit-Perfect Playback?
The best way to tell is to download one of the DTS tracks from here, and play them back with mplayer using the -ac hwdts option. If your receiver's DTS light comes on and you hear glorious music then your set up for bit-perfect output through your S/PDIF port.
