You'll be pleased to know that MythTV has built-in support for almost all remote controls by way of LIRC (Linux Infra-red Remote Control) integration. If you want to avoid LIRC completely but still use a remote, you can use a USB or PS/2 IR Wireless Keyboard and capture the keyboard commands via a programmable or learning remote. Some say that navigating MythTV is more responsive (faster) through IR keyboard commands than LIRC.
