  • AC-3: also known as Dolby Digital; Dolby's third generation audio coding algorithm. AC-3 is used for the audio on DVD's, HDTV, and digital cable and satellite transmissions.
  • Air2PC: TV tuner card made by Broadband Technologies; capable of receiving digital terrestrial broadcast TV (both standard- and high-definition)
  • ATSC: Advanced Television Systems Committee; usually refers to the ATSC DTV Standards which include digital HDTV, data broadcasting, and multichannel surround sound audio. The United States FCC has adopted major components of the ATSC DTV Standards. So has most of the Americas. (more info)
  • bttv: Linux driver for TV tuner cards using the bt848 and bt878 chips
  • CC: closed captioning; displays the audio portion of TV shows as text superimposed on the video. CC is used with the NTSC standard. (more info)
  • CVS: Concurrent Versions System; a version control system used to maintain the MythTV source code
  • DTV: digital television (more info)
  • DVB: Digital Video Broadcasting Project; similar to ATSC, DVB has developed standards for digital television and data services. DVB has been adopted by several countries around Europe and most of the World, except the America's, Japan, and Parts of asia. (more info)
  • EIT: event information table; the EIT is part of the DVB standard and provides schedule information for digital programming

  • FC3: Fedora Core 3; an open-source Linux distribution based off of Red Hat

  • ivtv: Linux driver for TV tuner cards using iTVC15 family of MPEG codecs; most commonly used with Hauppauge's PVR-250 and PVR-350 cards
  • LIRC: Linux Infrared Remote Control; a package for Linux that allows decoding and sending of infrared signals. LIRC can be used to allow various remote controls to work with MythTV.
  • MPEG: Moving Picture Experts Group; a group that defines standards for digital compression of video and audio signals (more info)
  • MPEG-2: a standard for encoding video and audio signals; several different algorithms (codecs) are available for compressing video into MPEG-2
  • MPEG-4: a newer standard designed to produce smaller files than MPEG-2
  • MySQL: an open-source database management system; MythTV uses MySQL to store many types of information including tuner card settings, program guide information, and scheduled and recorded program information
  • NTSC: National Television System Committee; usually refers to the NTSC Video Standard for analog television. NTSC is used in the United States. (more info)
  • nuv (Nuppel Video): video format used by MythTV when hardware encoding is not available
  • OSD: on-screen display
  • PAL: analog television standard predominant in countries outside of North America (more info)
  • PVR-250: TV tuner card made by Hauppauge; uses a 125 channel cable-ready tuner and has a bulit-in hardware MPEG-2 encoder
  • PVR-350: TV tuner card made by Hauppauge; similar to the PVR-250 but also includes a built-in hardware MPEG-2 decoder
  • QAM: quadrature amplitude modulation; a conversion method used when sending DTV cable signals over existing analog cable. Two forms of QAM available are QAM64 and QAM256.
  • QT: a cross-platform C++ application development framework from Trolltech; MythTV uses QT to provide cross-platform portability
