can we drop the personal opinions on hard drive manufacturers, its outdated, wrong, and just not appropriate.--Steveadeff 03:15, 30 January 2006 (UTC)

I agree. As cited in MythTV:Manual_of_Style#Avoid_the_second_person, usage of "I" and "we" is inappropriate, along with too much personal opinion. "Nothing but the facts, ma'am." --Gregturn 04:15, 30 January 2006 (UTC)
I'm not sure. As long as opinions are clearly marked, I personally think the anecdotal datapoints are useful, myself. I was the one who modified that section to note that we didn't have to be quite as impersonal as Wikipedia.  :-)

I think opinion can fit into the articles. For one example, I wrote up more elaboration on Wikipedia:Expect. I set aside a section called Opinion, and tried to gather both pro and con opinions, essentially giving other editors option to add their own opinions in to offer a consensus on the tool. I think wikipedia allows opinions, but they need to be properly cordined off (which I guess supports Baylink's comment). However, I still believe that "I" and "we" is inappropriate. It tends to latch onto personal, time-based experiences as opposed to timeless experience. "I found that this mechanism works very well in backing up my data" sounds a little better when rewritten as "This mechanism works very well in backing up data for the following reasons..." I guess I will follow this thread, and try to add some clarification based on the outcome to MythTV:Manual of Style (should it be warranted.) --Gregturn 04:34, 30 January 2006 (UTC)

I personally don't like the reccomendation of XFS or JFS, especially in conjunction with LVM. I've had problems where I wanted to remove one drive (and had plenty of room to do so), but since I took the reccomendation of using JFS, and JFS can't be reduced, I wound up losing everything when that one drive crashed. When I have time to rebuild my system, I intend to use a combination of RAID and LVM, but even with redundance I'm going to use ReiserFS instead of JFS. I would move towards a reccomendation of JFS or LVM if only using one drive, but in the LVM section reccomending something else.--AusIV 14:01, 19 September 2006 (UTC)

ZFS

Someone should mention using ZFS as file storage. I know it can't be used to it's full right in Linux yet. But using a separate server for storage could be an option for people.ChristianW 13:06, 17 July 2007 (UTC)
