Talk:Using MythTV

Guys can we break this into smaller sections please as it is getting bigger and bigger --Mikec 21:44, 20 April 2006 (UTC)

Can we seperate this from the other chapters in this section ("Diagnosing Problems, "Regression Testing", "Periodic Maintennance")? I think the other chapters would be better in their own section, and "Daily Use" should be purely about using the "PVR" features of MythTV? --Middy 14:02, 31 August 2009 (UTC)

Just wanted to say, this is way cool. Well done! --WhyTey

Well, as the guy who came up with the idea, I'll say thanks, on behalf of Kkuphal, and MikeC, who's been turning and burning filling in the good parts this week.  :-)

<< and >> during behind live TV

On this web page, I find:

to jump forward/backwards by the configured number of minutes (default is 10).
This is great to skip quickly over commercial

and my head exploded. Who has multiple 10 minute commercials they need to skip? I think that should say seconds, but since I don't know if that is correct, I didn't edit the page.

Default directories

I want to suggest that the default directories be more consistent across plugins and between upgrades... I would suggest:

  • /mnt/media
    • /mnt/media/audio (mythmusic)
    • /mnt/media/video
      • /mnt/media/video/dvd
      • /mnt/media/video/tv
    • /mnt/media/images (gallery)

these could be simlinks to /myth/video /myth/tv /myth/videos /myth/gallery but one could also set their fstab to mount ntfs shares from a stable RAID5/lvm mediaserver or usb drives or whatever to these locations.

Reinstallation or autoupgrades with knoppmyth would be much simpler this way.

Bookmarks

This section of the manual should contain info about bookmarks.

"Any station at any time" recording option

Is this option needed to allow recording on the same station on a different video source than the one the recording schedule was originally made for?

My situation is that I switch video sources depending on where I am (different cable systems). Can MythTV tell that ABC is still ABC even on a different video source? Or at least that WCVB is WCVB (same affiliate) even if the channel numbers are different? Or do I need to set the recording schedule to allow recording on any station?

"Any station" seems a bit too broad for my intention, which is just to allow recordings to work when I switch video sources. Perhaps I don't want to record syndicated reruns of network TV on some random cable channel, but they would be recorded with the "any station" option.

Thanks --RoundsToZero

"How to make backend/frontend autostart"

"Ideally mythbackend/mythfrontend should be autostarted when you power on your machine, see the user Manual:Detailed configuration Backend and user Manual:Detailed configuration Frontend on how to do this." The referenced articles contains just as little information on this that this specific page does; run /usr/bin/mythbackend - did someone eat a snip of the documentation and forget to put it back? --K2OS 01:56, 30 March 2008 (UTC)
