You'll be pleased to know that MythTV has built-in support for almost all remote controls by way of LIRC (Linux Infra-red Remote Control) integration. If you want to avoid LIRC completely but still use a remote, you can use a USB or PS/2 IR Wireless Keyboard and capture the keyboard commands via a programmable or learning remote. It is now also possible to use the built in kernel support without the use of LIRC. Some say that navigating MythTV is more responsive (faster) through IR keyboard commands than LIRC.
