Channels receivable by FireWire in Las Vegas, NV

In Las Vegas, Cox supplies FireWire-equipped Scientific Atlanta Explorer 3250HD cable boxes to customers who want HD service. Local HDTV channels (in the 730s) are available unencrypted over FireWire, in accordance with FCC regulations.

Several non-HD digital-cable channels are also receivable over FireWire. In the digital-cable tier, the block starting at channel 340 (the "Variety Programming Tier," as Cox calls it in the lineup) is receivable by FireWire. Several of the audio-only channels (up in the 900s) are receivable with the test-mpeg2 utility included with libiec61883, but MythTV doesn't know how to handle audio-only transport streams (last time I checked). Channels 101-125 also work (this group includes extra non-HD channels piggybacked on local HD broadcasters' signals and some more Discovery-affiliated channels).

Some of the basic-cable (below channel 100) channels are provided to the cable box in digital form and are available over FireWire. All of the basic-cable channels are receivable with a TV-tuner card, but the channels that can be captured over FireWire won't incur a quality loss from having been decoded and reencoded.
