  • AC-3: also known as Dolby Digital; Dolby's third generation audio coding algorithm. AC-3 is used for the audio on DVD's, HDTV, and digital cable and satellite transmissions.
  • ATSC: Advanced Television Systems Committee; usually refers to the ATSC DTV Standards which include digital HDTV, data broadcasting, and multichannel surround sound audio. The United States FCC has adopted major components of the ATSC DTV Standards. So has most of the Americas. (more info)
  • bttv: Linux driver for TV tuner cards using the bt848 and bt878 chips
  • CC: closed captioning; displays the audio portion of TV shows as text superimposed on the video. CC is used with the NTSC standard. (more info)
  • CVS: Concurrent Versions System; a version control system used to maintain the MythTV source code
  • DTV: digital television (more info)
  • DVB: Digital Video Broadcasting Project; similar to ATSC, DVB has developed standards for digital television and data services. DVB has been adopted by several countries around Europe and most of the World, except the America's, Japan, and Parts of asia. (more info)

  • MPEG-4: a newer standard designed to produce smaller files than MPEG-2
