SuSE 9.3 and 10.0 howto

This is still a work in progress.

Why another SuSE 9.3 howto

Well, SuSE as well as yast that is quite good at resolving depenencies, at least for software that is in the distro, SuSE has another package installer Ximian Red Carpet, which IMO is as good as Debian's Apt, but a damn site easier to use (if not easier to setup repositories). Novell however seem to be doing a good job of hiding what it can do when it's not hooked up to a ZLM server. opencarpet provide a link to some public red-carpet reposotiries, and it's trivial to create a local repository for your machine.

So, back to why another suse9.3 howto. I want a howto that will

  • . use red-carpet as the package manager
  • . use the distribution as much for as many of the dependancies as possable
  • . provide (or link to) .srpms and rpms for the additional packages that will work on suse9.3
  • . in the longer term, I hope to provide an opencarpet channel for the RPMs to make life even easier.
  • . easy for others to edit to include different hardware setups. (that's why it's on this wiki !)

hardware

This is currently written for my hardware namely

  • Leadtek WinFast TV 2000 XP card.
  • Dell Optiplex 240 with 512MB Ram.
  • Creative labs Nvidia AGPx2 graphics card with video out.
  • using a 20GB 2.5" hard disk to reduce noise. Main data will be on the network drive.

TV setup

I'm based on the UK, so all my channel setup stuff etc will be based on that.

I started looking at this setup as I had a bunch of stuff on my sky+ box (A great PVR, but not free in any sense of the word) that I wanted to archive off, and maybe dump onto DVD.

My goal for my PVR setup is to

  • record terestrial analogue broadcasts.
  • playback onto my main TV via the AV out of the graphics card.
  • record stuff from VCR
  • play DVDs
  • record live stuff from the Sky+ box (including changing channel)
  • record stuff recorded on the Sky+ box (ideally reading the program info first)

I know lots of this stuff is't possable yet. But hopefully I can help with some hacking too.

Layout

I'll try to break stuff up logically, and put it into subpages.

  • /Red Carpet Setup a short discussion about red-carpet, and how to set it up on your system. Some people may prefer Apt, but that's covered by the other suse howtos. With suse10.1 there will be much better ways of using public sources. I will update this with YUM sources soon. In the mean time, here's the quick and dirty way of using yast. It's my ultimate goal to get these into packman, but that may take a while. Hopefully with 0.19 I'll have the time to get the RPMs good enough they'll let them in.
