Description:  when I purchased Digital Cable service from my cable provider that made it clear that the movie channels, On Demand Channels, and Music channels can only be accessed through the receiver box that they rent to me.

If I go with MythTV or any other kind of Home Theater PC I'd like to remove that requirement.

Non-premium DTV stations can usually be recieved by an QAM-64/256 card (like the pcHDTV cards) in North America and a DVB-C card in Europe. In the USA, the only way to receive premium DTV stations off cable is through the receiver box, while in Europe you will need a DVB-C card with an Access Control slot, for which your cable company can supply the needed CA card.

If you are in the USA, you should know that most Cable and Satelite receiver boxes can be controlled by MythTV. Using the serial, USB, or firewire interfaces, or failing that an IR Blaster. This will only allow you to low fidelity NTSC programming, but so far most premium content is LoFi.

If you go to http://mythtv.beirdo.ca/wiki/index.php/FAQ, you will find a pretty well started FAQ list. Should we enlist Beirdo to either copy or move his material over here? Or perhaps link back to his site? --Gregturn 05:39, 21 January 2006 (UTC)

Baylink, I can begin to manually bring it over if the idea is that the FAQ will end up officially residing here? David, thoughts? Also, is this a FAQ or is it the official documentation, because on mythtv.org it is listed as "Documentation".--Steveadeff 19:35, 19 January 2006 (UTC)

I like Frequently Asked Questions over Mythtv Users F A Q because it is succinct and already linked to from Main Page. --Gregturn 15:50, 1 March 2006 (UTC)

Is that manual step with the script still needed? It seems that removing recordings which no longer have files associated to them works just fine by default.

I've copied most of the questions from Mythtv Users F A Q to here.  I took a couple that were more mailing list FAQs than MythTV FAQs and put them on Mailing List etiquette. If you agree with my changes, then you can delete Mythtv Users F A Q. Fishter 22:02, 18 March 2006 (UTC)

This was a major issue for me:

I can't scan DVB-S card, or even import channels.conf!

(And I see "DiSEqCDevTree, Error: No root device tree node!" in the output) A: Go to the card's settings in mythtv-setup, and configure DiSEqC. If you don't use DiSEqC switch, set it's type to LNB, default settings.

I wanted to post my own question to this page, without being so bold as to directly edit the page in case that would be deemed to be improper etiquette.

How do I remove recordings that no longer exist on disk?

Is that manual step with the script still needed? It seems that removing recordings which no longer have files associated to them works just fine by default.
