Revision as of 01:13, 30 March 2008

I have begun adding more information that I have come across in my own installation. I would have gotten through things much quicker if this was all in one location, however I'm not sure if I'm going beyond the original scope of this document. I would have no problem if my additions were cut/pasted into their own wiki pages, added to the "HOWTO" section. It might be useful to have, for instance, a "LiRC Install on Debian Etch"-specific HOWTO. Perhaps, after I get all the information down that I wish to contribute, I will do just that.

ivtv-utils question

Thanks for starting this HowTo... I've a question on ivtv-utils...

I'm having problems getting ivtv-utils installed on my system and noticed that it's currently marked as "unstable". none of my entries in /etc/apt/sources.list reference "unstable" so how did you get ivtv-utils etc to install on your system? Or is there a step missing?

At the moment this question was posted indeed no correct ivtv package was in etch (it was 'testing' at that moment). Now Debian GNU/Linux 4.0 has been officially released you should be able to install it without any problem! --Michel 20:46, 8 May 2007 (UTC)

LIRC

I moved this to the Talk page for LIRC-on-Debian-etch, since it's more relevant there.

Etch (is not Lenny nor Sid)

As this page talks about Debian GNU/Linux 4.0 (etch) I think additional information for other Debian versions does not need to be presented at this page. I.m.h.o. the average user 'just wants to install a MythTV box on Debian GNU/Linux', the stable version. So don't bother those people with an overkill of information.

Therefor, I removed the part about 'lines for /etc/apt/sources.list' for 'lenny' and 'sid'.

I think if people want to play with testing (lenny) or unstable (sid) Debian installations they are far enough to adapt their sources.list --Michel 19:56, 26 April 2007 (UTC)

I completely forgot that it was an Etch-specific document. :-P You can remove this entire Discussion section if you want ... it was a ridiculous addition on my part and didn't require any justification in its removal (thanks, though). --Dgymnycee 16:55, 26 April 2007 (EDT? EST? Both?)

No, I want to keep this for a future Installing_MythTV_on_Debian_Lenny page or so, as that will be the upcoming release sooner or (more probably) later. --Michel 21:12, 10 May 2007 (UTC)

As you may see, I started moving parts of the content to a raw draft for a Installing_MythTV_on_Debian_Lenny page --Michel 19:54, 31 May 2007 (UTC)

I don't know if this belongs here, or on a mailinglist somewhere, but there seems to be a gap between how the installation looks after installing from source and from .deb. After installing from source, there is no init-script installed in /etc/init.d/ as stated in the next step after running mythtv-setup. If there is no init-script, maybe points where an init-script could be made? (if these exists anywhere). Furthermore, the user mythtv is not created either (are we supposed to add this user ourselves? It's only stated that we should remember to set a password for the user mythtv (for me this is not important as I am running myth as another users, for others this might be relevant). debian-multimedia.org

apt is reporting 404 errors for debian-multimedia.org (the provider for the Debian MythTV packages), and the site is displaying some French webmail login. Is this permanently down? Will there be a replacement? --Dgymnycee 12:41, 26 September 2007 (UTC)

Nope. Christian Marillat (the maintainer of debian-multimedia.org) has only 1.6T bandwith limit for the debian-multimedia.org site. With the new acroread packages (also hosted over there!) he reached the bandwidth for this month, so October, 1st you may try again. Or use one of the mirrors... (one in Germany: deb http://debian-multimedia.informatik.uni-erlangen.de/ stable main) --Michel 14:05, 26 September 2007 (UTC)

I added the list of mirrors to the main page. If it isn't up to date (all I have to go with at this point is the Google Cache entry) please feel free to update it. --Dgymnycee 14:41, 26 September 2007 (UTC)
