This page, and the Detailed configuration pages (which should really be linked from it, instead of from the Contents page), are a bit rough, and really descend into "making your computer be a MythBox", which was explicitly outside the scope of the User Manual, in my initial conception of it. Additionally, they're covered by large parts of the rest of the Wiki, and RK's Install Guide. I believe we should move Initial Installation to some other page some place, and link the Detailed Config sections as Appendixes to the manual. But, since I'm not doing the lion's share of the work thereon at the moment, I figured I'd ask instead of just doing.  :-) --Baylink 20:20, 6 February 2006 (UTC)

--Mikec 20:58, 6 February 2006 (UTC) Probably worth waiting a bit longer until there is more content, as I'm sure more structure will materialize. The issue at the moment is that there are too many places to put things as there is not enough structure or compartments. If you move it now someone may write a very similar section again!

Otherwise I agree with your premise of a user manual.

On the detailed config sections, I'm currently thinking that there will be detailed screen shot type items that precede the reference items (which probably need to moved to an appendix) but I wanted to keep all the config stuff together at the moment so its in one place to stop duplication elsewhere.

for example I am planning to write a section on tuning your dvb cards and setting up channel data and icons etc which will be in the backend config section.

Oh, wait. I see that's what Baylink was talking about. So which parts should be culled out? Do we start with the mythtv-setup section and just note that the user ought to have done all of those other steps already?--DirkGecko 18:34, 19 November 2007 (UTC)

Shouldn't this section first contain a high level description of the various terms and concepts used in MythTV, such as "Sources", "Inputs", etc, as well as example architectures? I am still struggling to fully understand the nuances between all the various components of MythTV.

I found that I needed to add libqt3-mt-dev as a dependency before I could compile mythtv.

xvmc?

I noticed watching live 720p MPEG-2 was dropping frames & maxing out a CPU core. Digging deeper, I found an extensive page on setting up XvMC and video-card-aided decoding.

But this install page doesn't speak of XvMC, including not listing it as a dependency (I changed this already). Does anyone more experienced than me have any thoughts on this? Does this kind of detail belong on this installation page?
