Hardware Wishlist

Case

I'd like to replace my existing frontends and backends with some better looking, better spec'd hardware. The Asus barebones 'Pundit' models with nvidia graphics (e.g. P1-AH2) are the very best cases I've seen for frontend-only and combined frontend/backend systems. They cost around £100 (US $200).

The following characteristics are pretty unique for any case in this low price range and make them ideal for mythtv:

  • Small form factor, little bigger than most STBs
  • They include on-board TV out (Nvidia GF6) and DVI out
  • A range of card reading and USB ports on the front for loading photographs and other media
  • The front panel slots are neatly hidden away behind a fold down panel, unlike most cases where they ruin the looks
  • Two PCI slots - can therefore hold two tuners which is more than enough (dual tuners, multirec)
  • Onboard sound includes S/PDIF-out
  • Available in silver, black and sometimes white, so should fit in alongside most other media units and TVs
  • Can be used upright (book style) or on their side

Downsides are that Asus change the spec of these models frequently and availability varies greatly. Generally instead of reducing the price of a lower spec model they just increase the spec and hold the price.

I'm struggling to find anywhere in the UK that stocks the version with Nvidia graphics in the silver finish but really want at least one for a combined frontend/backend in the living room.

Tuners

I've got plenty of DVB-T tuners, but would like to add to those by getting a DVB-S card so that I can experiment with FreeSat and BBC HD.

My Task List:

  • Sort out settings to make setup quicker and easier. This means creating two modes, novice and expert, splitting settings in into each group. Using a locale based auto-config, settings which are defined by where you live e.g. Video format, languages, interactive TV etc should all be automatically populated simply by choosing the correct locale from a list on the first startup. Some settings might be replaced with more intelligent auto-detection and some text-entry settings replaced with pre-populated lists.
  • Improve streaming on remote frontends. Current buffering/streaming just isn't sufficient on connections which are just a little slow e.g. Patchy wireless. It's perfectly possible to get perfect streamed playback on such connections using Kaffeine and the mythweb ASX stream, so the solution shouldn't be too difficult.
  • Handle the correct muting/recording of line-in from within mythtv setup to simplify framegrabber setup (Might not be possible, but if it is, then it's simple fix)
  • Allow 2 or more listings sources for one video source. (Don't add channels. Don't run grabber twice for single source)
  • Don't buffer keypresses - e.g.scrolling programme guide
  • Add option to liveTV recording starting menu to watch remainder of liveTV buffer
  • Add disk based caching of mheg stuff, images etc
  • Move filters into playback groups
  • The duplicate check method "Record New Episodes Only" either needs re-wording or making a little smarter. It doesn't work as it should like it should for users with no 'Repeat' information in their guide data.

Working on now

  • Replace current mythmusic playlist editor using the new table structure to it's full advantage. - Currently on hold but I intend finishing this, hopefully before 0.21 is released.
  • All things MythUI

Finished Recently

  • Mythtv setup needs to use the theme cache to reduce it's load time - it can take upto 45 seconds without displaying anything leading users to assume it has hung.
  • Add time container to Menus
  • Watched flag doesn't take hard-offsets into account or incomplete recordings
  • Add a range of possible new video, audio and subtitle properties along with icons to reflect the possible values.
