With one sp/dif connection (one cable) and one configuration (no effort to switch modes or anything), i'd like to be able to

  • record and playback surround sound in LiveTV
  • play local media with surround (ie .mkv video, DVDs, ripped DVDs)
  • play local media that doesn't have surround encoded in it
  • stereo sound from other stuff like games and music
  • surround sound from games like UT2K4 (I don't think this will be possible over a digital link)

I have these available cards:

  • Realtek ALC850 ("Karajan" module on the DFI SLI-DR mobo)
  • Sound Blaster Audigy
  • Montego DDL (alas dolby encoding isn't supported under linux)
