CCI Copy Freely Letter Campaign
July 2015
This is a letter writing campaign to hopefully convince content and network providers to use the more permissive CCI=Copy Freely (0x00) flag on their broadcasts so that Myth TV and other software can view their content using widely available hardware.
Why
A thread started here: MythTV-Users List
prompted this idea. It seems more and more content is being flagged as "Copy Once." When this happens, Myth TV users and other free and open source software users cannot access that content using only a cable card rented from their cable company. Of course, cable companies like Time Warner have long flagged *all* their channels as "copy once."
It is hoped that a letter writing campaign can open media companies eyes to their short-sighted choices.
What Can I Do?
- Of course, once this letter has been hashed out and finished, sign it in colored ink and send it off!
- Help refine the letter. There is a separate thread on the mythtv-users list Here regarding this page and this campaign.
- Help find new names and companies to send this letter to. Either post to the thread above or edit this page yourself.
- Social Media! All modern corporations are social media aware. Ask other users to join this campaign. This is more to get the attention of the companies than anything else. Post a link to this page. #CCICopyFreely
The Letter <<DRAFT>>
<Date> <Content Or Network Provider> <Address> <City State Zip> Re: CCI Flag Use On Your Digital Content Dear People: I am writing to express my concern regarding the use of the Copy Control Information (CCI) flag during broadcasting of your digital media. In more and more cases, I am finding this flag to be set to a restrictive “Copy Once” (digital 0x02) or higher instead of a more permissive “Copy Freely” (digital 0x00). I am writing in the hope that this trend can be reversed. I use free and open source software like Myth TV or Kodi to view your content over hardware like the Silicon Dust HDHomerun Prime or the Ceton InfiniTV. When the CCI flag is set to something other than “Copy Freely” your content is not viewable with the software I choose to use. When this happens you lose me and [[my family | my roomates | my office ]] as viewers. There are tens of thousands of us using a variety of software and hardware to view your content. Please support our ability to view your content the way we want by enabling the “Copy Freely” CCI flag on your content. Thank You, [[Signed in Colored Ink]]
