Just as a note, while the system is called VideoLAN, VLC is the most well known part of it. They do, however, have VLS (While it's not pushed nearly so hard, as it's not as "mature" as VLC), and a mini SAP server to announce your own streams provided by other systems. That's why I initially pointed to VLC. --Anaerin 19:13, 27 January 2006 (UTC)

I'm missing a distinction between the various live media transmission standards that usually get called IPTV

  • DVB-IPTV (formerly DVB-IPI, think DLNA/UPNP for a larger audience)
  • almost DVB-IPTV (what your ISP serves you e.g. Freebox, MPEG2 TS Multicast on MBone)
  • stuff thats at least somewhat close to some MPEG standard (MPEG Codecs via HTTP etc., think Shoutcast Radios)
  • any other mediastreaming via IP Networks (basically stuff that does not fit into a MPEG2 SPTS)
